The Long Family

Elizabeth Long was the daughter of Daniel Rutter Long, a chemist, who migrated with his family from England to Melbourne on 30th September 1840 on the “Himalaya”.

The son of a chemist and druggist, Daniel Rutter Long had completed a seven-year apprenticeship in England with fellow Quaker Jacob Bell, founder of the Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.

In Melbourne, Daniel first worked as a surgeon’s assistant in Collingwood and, by 1841, was managing the pharmacy of Dr. Wimott, the first coroner in Port Phillip (Melbourne). In 1843, he established his own pharmacy in Bourke Street, where Governor LaTrobe’s family were among his clientele.

Daniel was also an artist, depicting various locations in Gippsland and surrounding Colonies. His sketchbook dates from 1856 and on his retirement in 1857, he devoted more time to his art whilst also being elected Mayor and doing other civic duties. He painted many charming watercolours as well as pencil drawings. His sketchbook contains 52 drawings, all of which have been digitised by the State Library of Victoria.

Some examples of his art are shown below:
